Typically go Me/Mo with Signet of Illusions, the standard smite skills, illusion of weakness, and a healing sig of some kind. put all points into illusion magic and healing magic.

Well, if you are using a monk smiter, make sure that they cast Holy Wrath before Retribution. Also just bring another hero to simply heal the smiter, or if you are running people have them bring heals. Best of luck to you.

Or make him a Mo/W and give him healing signet.
HealSig plus Sig of Devotion is sufficient for him to stay alive.

-40 armor only doubles damage that factors in armor. The damage the smiter is taking is from Reversal of Damage, which ignores armor.

You can actually equip retribution on the tank if you set it up right. You get about half the damage out of retribution, but this way you do not need heals and are not up to the mercy of the pugs letting your smiter die.
just switch out ret and balth spirit from your smiter and your tank :-)
cast ret first on the tank then holy wrath and you get the damage from reversal and your smiter is saved
I use different headpieces when i cast enchantments as a tank.

i use a mesmer smiter and keep a +15/-1 offhand on switch to engage mobs when low on energy. you should go out from most battles with plenty of energy though.

Make sure your hero is using survivor and vitae runes, has the best vigor you can afford, and is equipped with a +60 health weapon set.
Also: You don't really need Life attunement for CoF runs. If you want, you can replace life attunement with balths spirit and take balths spirit off of your bar. I often bring LoD in its place. This gives you another pip of energy if you find you are needing it, plus now you can do more damage and uncover treasure.
Honestly though you shouldn't need energy. Just don't spam so much in the fights - the more you get used to the run the more you won't need to because you will know when enchantments are about to drop.
And you shouldn't really be running this without other people. You can make 2k per person you bring with you, so why not run someone? And even if you don't want to do that, don't you invite your friends to come with you for something that takes over an hour? Where they can get free drops? =) Tell em to bring mending and a heal or two, and you'll be good. Or like people said, bring a third healer hero. If I ever do that I give him mending and succor, and word of healing, heal breeze, etc.
You'll get it =)
And take bard's advice on the high energy set ^^

I use only Me/Mo on Gwen. She never dies, never even comes close.
16 Illusion
Sig. of Illusions
Retribution
Holy Wrath
Vital Blessing
Mending (On herself)
Illusion of Weakness
Rebirth
(opt)
Disable Bonds, and use Sig. of Illusions to add the three to yourself, use the Sig. again to put Mending on Gwen. I give her a 60HP Staff, and that combined with Mending and IoW just in case, and she never has a problem. Once I agro, I don't stop, just plow on through. In multiple group areas, such as the very start, the ramp down to the master(s), etc she can handle multiple banshee without breaking a sweat.
Just my $.02
